Last Week's In-Stores: We Packed 'Em In

We're still catching up on this end, so here are a few shots from the band's back-to-back, in-store performances at The Louisiana Music Factory (LMF) and Tower Records.

So many people were packed into LMF that they were grooving in the store's packed aisles, staking out spots on the staircase, and spilling out into the street.

There were even a few celebrity sightings. That's me, looking goofy in this picture, but it's proof that Harry Shearer, of "This Is Spinal Tap" and "The Simpsons" fame (Mr. Burns, Smithers, Principal Skinner, Rev. Lovejoy, and many more) came to see Kirk and the Groove at LMF, which is right across the street from House of Blues.

The folks at Tower Records complained that it had been a slow day for their in-stores, which I took as an attempt to prepare us for playing to a big, empty space, and indeed it had been pretty empty when I stopped in during another performance an hour or so before we were scheduled. But if what I was told hed been true, we must have broken the spell because we had a crowd of spectators at Tower as well.

We even had a woman who introduced herself to us as "Mama" and our local Nubian Princess moving to Kirk and the Groove. We must be doing something right! (Of course we are!)

Clearly, the band appeals to a wide variety of folks.

This is Hiro's wife Yumi, one of my favorite photographic subjects, taken during the Tower show.

Stay tuned....there's more to come.

Feature Article, Front Page

To get to Kirk Jopseph's front page article in the Times Picayune (our daily paper), you can try this link, then select the article entitled "Sousafunk Synergy," but you may be required to enter your zip code, gender and year of birth before you get the article. That's not asking too much, is it?

Kirk Joseph on the Front Page

Welcome to the Backyard Blog. We have a lot of catching up to do here, with so much happening these days. But how's this for a start:

Tomorrow's Times Picayune (New Orleans' daily paper) is doing a front page feature article on Kirk Joseph and his Backyard Groove project, in conjunction with the bands appearance at Jazz Fest.

Friday, April 29, 2005- Jazz & Heritage Stage,
3:15-4:15 PM with a CD signing event at the Virgin Records tent at 4:30PM.

Catch the band tonight (technically, tomorrow morning) at The Blue Nile on Frenchman Street for a 2:00 AM show. Come a few hours earlier and you can Kirk playing with the Forgotten Souls Brass Band at The Blue Nile as well.

I think Kirk and saxophonist Tim Green (who plays with Anders Osborne and just about everyone else at times) must be tied for the title of Most Gigs During the Week of Jazz Fest. Kevin O'Day is definitely a conternder as well. Actually, most of the band is in the running here, but Kirk and Tim are routinely racking up numbers like 4 gigs in a 24 hour period.

You can show your appreciation for all the hard work these guys are doing to keep you entertained by catching some live shows and buying CDs.

Hope to see you at the show tonight!
